GMAT Preparation for Indian Students
The GMAT is designed specifically for graduate management education. It measures Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights. The current exam takes 2 hours and 15 minutes and contains 64 questions. The total score ranges from 205 to 805. Indian students use GMAT scores for MBA and other graduate business programs in the United States, Europe, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Asia and other destinations where business schools accept the exam.
My Assignments Pro offers live classes, one to one tutoring, timed practice, mock tests and a personal score improvement plan. Preparation can focus on the complete test or on a single weak area such as Data Insights or Verbal Reasoning.
Who should take the GMAT
GMAT is most relevant for students targeting MBA and specialized business master programs that accept or value GMAT scores. Some business schools also accept GRE. Before choosing GMAT, check whether your target programs require a test, accept more than one test or operate a test optional policy.
Current GMAT Format
| Section | Questions | Time | Main focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quantitative Reasoning | 21 | 45 minutes | Problem solving using arithmetic and algebraic reasoning |
| Verbal Reasoning | 23 | 45 minutes | Reading comprehension and critical reasoning |
| Data Insights | 20 | 45 minutes | Data sufficiency, multi source reasoning, tables, graphics and two part analysis |
GMAT scoring
The GMAT total score ranges from 205 to 805. Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights contribute equally to the total score. Section scores are reported separately along with percentile information. The current score scale should not be compared directly with the older 200 to 800 scale because the exam and score distribution changed.
Where GMAT scores are used
GMAT is widely used by graduate business schools around the world. It is designed for MBA and business master admissions and is accepted by business programs across major study destinations including the United States, Europe, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore and other international education markets. Program policies change, so use the admissions page of each business school as the final source.
When should you start GMAT preparation
Most students should allow ten to sixteen weeks for a structured preparation cycle. Students who are working full time may prefer a longer plan with shorter weekday sessions. A diagnostic exam should come first because the balance between Quant, Verbal and Data Insights differs sharply from one student to another.
A practical daily GMAT schedule
- 45 minutes of concept work or targeted questions in the weakest section
- 30 to 45 minutes of timed mixed questions
- 20 to 30 minutes of error log review
- Reading practice for argument structure and data interpretation
- One section level test during the week and one longer mock session on the weekend
Section wise GMAT strategy
Quantitative Reasoning
Master arithmetic and algebraic reasoning, then practise deciding the shortest reliable path to an answer. The section tests reasoning, not advanced mathematics. Accuracy should come before speed during the first phase of preparation.
Verbal Reasoning
Train close reading and argument evaluation. For Critical Reasoning, identify the conclusion, evidence and assumption before evaluating answer choices. For Reading Comprehension, practise finding the main purpose and the evidence for each inference.
Data Insights
Learn to move between tables, graphics and written information without getting lost in unnecessary detail. Data Sufficiency requires a different mindset from ordinary problem solving. Decide whether the information is enough instead of calculating everything automatically.
Common GMAT mistakes
- Using an old GMAT preparation plan built around the previous exam format
- Ignoring Data Insights because Quant or Verbal feels more familiar
- Chasing difficult questions before basic accuracy is stable
- Spending too much time on one question and damaging the rest of the section
- Comparing a current GMAT score directly with an old 200 to 800 score
- Choosing a test date before checking the application deadlines of target schools
What to do in the final two weeks
Use full length practice to refine pacing, section order and break strategy. Review the errors that repeat across mocks. Avoid making major strategy changes in the last few days unless something is clearly failing. Keep sleep and meal timing stable so test day feels familiar.
GMAT or GRE for an MBA
GMAT is built specifically for graduate business education and includes Data Insights. GRE is accepted by many MBA programs and can also be used for a wider range of graduate fields. If you are only targeting business school, GMAT may align closely with that goal. If you are also applying to non business graduate programs, GRE may provide more flexibility. Your target school policy should decide the final choice.
