TOEFL iBT Preparation for Indian Students
TOEFL iBT measures academic English used in university settings. From January 21, 2026, ETS introduced an updated adaptive test experience and a new score scale. Students receive section scores and an overall score on a 1 to 6 scale in half point increments. During the transition period, ETS also reports a comparable overall score on the older 0 to 120 scale. The current test takes about two hours and measures Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking.
My Assignments Pro provides live online classes, one to one tutoring, mock tests, personal study plans, speaking practice, writing evaluation and score improvement planning. Sessions can be scheduled around Indian college and work timings. Preparation is designed around your current level, target score and application deadline.
Who should prepare for TOEFL iBT
TOEFL iBT is designed for non native English speakers applying to universities and other institutions that require evidence of academic English proficiency. Indian students often use TOEFL for applications to the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Europe and other destinations where the test is accepted.
TOEFL iBT test format
| Section | Approximate base time | Current task focus |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | 30 minutes | Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life and Read an Academic Passage |
| Listening | 29 minutes | Responses, conversations, announcements and academic talks |
| Writing | 23 minutes | Build a Sentence, Write an Email and Write for an Academic Discussion |
| Speaking | 8 minutes | Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview |
How TOEFL iBT scoring works
For tests taken from January 21, 2026, TOEFL iBT reports four section scores and an overall score on a 1 to 6 scale in half point increments. The overall score is based on the average of the four section scores and is rounded to the nearest half point. ETS also provides a comparable overall score on the 0 to 120 scale during a two year transition period. Always compare your target university requirement with the scoring format shown on its admissions page.
Countries and destinations where TOEFL iBT is used
TOEFL iBT scores are accepted by more than 13,500 institutions worldwide and are used across more than 160 countries. Common destinations include the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and countries across Europe and Asia. Institution policies and visa rules can differ, so verify the current requirement for your chosen program.
How long should you prepare for TOEFL iBT
Start with eight to twelve weeks if your academic English is reasonably strong and you mainly need test familiarity, pacing and targeted skill work. Students who need a significant improvement in vocabulary, listening comprehension or spoken and written accuracy should allow more time. Since the 2026 format changed task types and scoring, use preparation material built for the current version of the test.
A practical daily study schedule
- 45 minutes of reading and vocabulary work using academic and everyday English
- 30 to 45 minutes of active listening with short written or spoken summaries
- 20 to 30 minutes of timed speaking practice
- 30 minutes of writing or sentence building practice on alternate days
- One timed mixed skill session during the week and a longer mock session on the weekend
Section wise preparation strategy
Reading preparation
Practise the current question types and build comfort moving between everyday and academic reading. Work on speed, vocabulary in context and identifying the exact evidence that supports an answer.
Listening preparation
Take short notes instead of trying to write everything you hear. After each practice set, explain the main idea and important supporting details without looking at your notes. This checks whether you understood the message rather than only recognised words.
Writing preparation
Practise accurate sentence construction, clear email responses and concise academic discussion writing. Focus on relevance, organisation and language control. Build the habit of checking grammar and meaning in the final minute.
Speaking preparation
The updated test includes listen and repeat and interview style speaking tasks. Practise clear pronunciation, steady pace, accurate repetition and direct answers. Record practice responses so that you can hear weak endings, hesitation and unclear words.
Common preparation mistakes to avoid
- Using old TOEFL material without checking whether it matches the 2026 format
- Preparing only for the older 0 to 120 scoring system
- Taking long notes during Listening and missing the next idea
- Giving speaking answers that are longer than the task requires
- Ignoring sentence accuracy because the test feels fast
- Assuming every university uses the same TOEFL minimum score
What to do in the final week
In the final week, use the current ETS format for timed practice. Run at least one full simulation, review your weakest task types and practise speaking on the same device setup you use for preparation. Keep the last day light and confirm test centre or Home Edition requirements before test day.

Compare TOEFL iBT with other test options
TOEFL is a strong option for students who prefer an academic computer based test and want broad global acceptance. IELTS includes a live speaking interview. PTE Academic uses a fully computer based test centre format. DET is shorter and taken from home, but acceptance must be checked for each institution and program.
