GRE Preparation for Indian Students
The GRE General Test is used for admission to thousands of graduate, business and law programs worldwide. It measures Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing. The current computer delivered test takes about 1 hour and 58 minutes. Indian students often use GRE scores when applying for master degrees, PhD programs, selected MBA programs and some law programs, particularly in the United States and other international destinations.
My Assignments Pro provides live classes, one to one tutoring, verbal and quant practice, mock tests, analytical writing evaluation and score improvement planning. Preparation is built around your baseline score, course goals and test date.
Who should take the GRE
The GRE is relevant when the graduate or professional program you are applying to accepts or requires it. It can be useful for students applying across more than one type of graduate program because the same test is accepted by graduate schools and by many business and law programs. Check every program on your shortlist because requirements can be required, optional, recommended or not used at all.
Current GRE General Test format
| Measure | Sections | Questions | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Analytical Writing | 1 | 1 Analyze an Issue task | 30 minutes |
| Verbal Reasoning | 2 | 12 questions then 15 questions | 18 minutes then 23 minutes |
| Quantitative Reasoning | 2 | 12 questions then 15 questions | 21 minutes then 26 minutes |
GRE scoring
Verbal Reasoning is scored from 130 to 170. Quantitative Reasoning is scored from 130 to 170. Analytical Writing is scored from 0 to 6 in half point increments. GRE scores are reportable for five years after the test date. ETS also offers ScoreSelect, which allows test takers to choose which test date scores to send when they have taken the GRE more than once.
Where GRE scores are accepted
GRE General Test scores are accepted by thousands of graduate programs worldwide. ETS also reports that more than 1,300 business schools accept GRE scores for some or all MBA programs, and a growing group of law schools accepts GRE for JD admission. Common destinations include the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and other countries with graduate programs that list GRE as an accepted test. Always check the individual program policy.
When should you start GRE preparation
A twelve to sixteen week plan works well for many students who are balancing college or work with preparation. Strong quant students may need more time for verbal vocabulary and reading. Students from non quantitative backgrounds may need a longer mathematics rebuild. Begin with a diagnostic test and avoid setting a test date only by copying another student timeline.
A practical daily GRE schedule
- 45 minutes of Quantitative Reasoning concept work or timed problem sets
- 45 minutes of Verbal Reasoning with vocabulary in context and reading practice
- 20 to 30 minutes of error review
- Analytical Writing practice two or three times each week
- One timed section set during weekdays and one longer mock session on the weekend
Section wise GRE preparation strategy
Quantitative Reasoning
Build arithmetic, algebra, data analysis and geometry foundations before chasing shortcuts. Keep an error log that separates concept errors, calculation errors and time management errors. Use the on screen calculator only when it saves time.
Verbal Reasoning
Build vocabulary through reading and sentence context instead of memorising long lists without usage. Practise text completion, sentence equivalence and reading comprehension under time. Pay attention to argument structure and what the passage actually supports.
Analytical Writing
Practise the Analyze an Issue task with a clear position, logical paragraph structure and specific support. Good writing is not about using complicated words. It is about a defensible argument, relevant examples and control of language.
Common GRE mistakes
- Trying to learn thousands of words without using them in context
- Ignoring basic quant concepts and jumping straight to difficult questions
- Spending too long on one question when the section is adaptive
- Taking mock tests without reviewing the reason for each error
- Neglecting Analytical Writing until the final week
- Assuming every graduate program needs the GRE
What to do in the final two weeks
Shift from learning new topics to timed performance and error correction. Complete at least one official style full test, review recurring mistakes and practise your preferred pacing strategy. Use the final days for lighter review, sleep consistency and test day planning.
GRE or GMAT for business school
Many business schools accept both GRE and GMAT, but the better choice depends on the schools you are targeting and your strengths. GMAT is designed specifically for graduate management education and includes Data Insights. GRE offers broader use across graduate fields and includes Analytical Writing. Check the policy of every target business school before deciding.
